What holds students back

In my experience, many students are held back by a number of common barriers that include a lack of confidence in their ability, knowledge gaps and misconceptions, having difficulty solving multi-step problems and generally finding mathematical concepts challenging to understand.

My tutoring focuses on identifying the specific barriers each student faces and then helping to address them, so that they gain the confidence and ability to succeed in maths and achieve the GCSE grade they are capable of.

Building confidence

Confidence is often the key that unlocks progress in maths.  Many students know more than they think but do not trust themselves enough to ‘have a go’.  They can also mistake positive ‘struggle’ for failure and avoid the more difficult questions or give up too quickly.

I believe that the best way to build confidence is to start with something the student already understands and build from there.  Over time this creates a positive cycle in which growing confidence leads to improved resilience and further progress.  It is incredibly rewarding to see students increasingly trust themselves and their mathematical ability.

Addressing knowledge gaps and misconceptions

Many students struggle with current topics because knowledge gaps have quietly built up over time; and sometimes these are foundational ones, dating back to KS2.  I work with students to identify their specific knowledge gaps at an early stage and address them through ongoing tutoring sessions.

It is also common for students to hold quite ‘deep-seated’ misconceptions around how a mathematical process works, leading them to repeatedly make the same mistakes whilst believing they are correct.  As a maths teacher I am well aware of the most commonly held misconceptions and place significant emphasis on identifying and correcting them; since this is often where some of the biggest breakthroughs in understanding occur.

Problem solving and reasoning

GCSE maths places significant emphasis on interpreting contexts, problem-solving and reasoning.  This can result in students struggling to know when and how to apply different mathematical methods; particularly in respect of multi-step and/or cross-topic questions. These tend to be 3+ markers and knowing how to tackle them can be grade changing.

I help students approach these problems through a structured four-stage approach, whereby they learn to:

  • Identify what the question is asking and the relevant areas of maths.
  • Plan out and order the steps required to solve the problem.
  • Solve the problem by executing the plan.
  • Review whether the question has been answered and makes sense.

With practice, this approach can really improve a student’s confidence and ability to tackle the higher-mark questions.

Tutoring for understanding

Whilst there has been a welcome move in recent years towards maths being taught for genuine understanding, many students still feel that the subject requires the use of too many methods that they find difficult to comprehend and remember.  I place great emphasis on explaining mathematical approaches in ways that are understandable and my students have often fed back that this is one of my strengths.

When appropriate I use a range of visual representations and practical mathematical aids to support understanding.  I also place importance on showing students how similar representations and approaches can be used across multiple maths topics, which helps them to develop stronger overall understanding and confidence.
